Advisement/Careers

The Advising Program is a distinctive feature of the CMHC Program at TCNJ. All CMHC students will receive comprehensive advising and support through this program, which is structured into six stages, each concentrating on crucial aspects of your academic and professional journey. Students will participate in advising sessions each semester with a faculty advisor, will have access to an “advising hub” of educational and career-related resources, and will have access to optional advising workshops offered during each session. All advising sessions and activities are intentionally designed to support CMHC students’ academic success, career development, and personal growth as future clinical mental health counselors.

Career advising is a key component of the CMHC Advising Program. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the projected job growth for clinical mental health counselors in the next 10 years is “much faster than average.” The Advising Program aims to prepare CMHC students to be highly competitive applicants for a wide range of roles in this growing career path. Graduates of our program will be prepared to work in settings such as mental health agencies, hospitals, community health centers, and private practice. Throughout your time in the program, you will work with faculty advisors to clarify career goals within the counseling field, create a resume, build a professional network, gain practical experience, develop a job search strategy, and establish a strong professional presence. Advisors will also assist you in navigating the licensure process and emphasize the importance of ongoing education and self-care.

Additionally, the faculty will help you track your competency development, ensuring you acquire the essential skills to become an effective counselor. Faculty advisors will also support students in creating and refining their academic plan and preparing for standardized licensure exams. This structured approach aims to equip students with the tools and support needed to succeed in their studies and future careers as clinical mental health counselors.
