The Advising Program is a distinctive feature of the CMHC Program at TCNJ. All CMHC students receive comprehensive advising and support through this program, which is structured into six stages, each concentrating on crucial aspects of the academic and professional journey. Students participate in group advising sessions each semester with the CMHC Career Counselor, have access to an “advising hub” of educational and career-related resources, and attend workshops on skill development and career exploration. All advising sessions and activities are intentionally designed to support CMHC students’ academic success, career development, and personal growth as future clinical mental health counselors.
Career advising is a key component of the CMHC Advising Program. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the projected job growth for clinical mental health counselors in the next 10 years is “much faster than average.” The Advising Program aims to prepare CMHC students to be highly competitive applicants for a wide range of roles in this growing career path. Graduates of our program will be prepared to work in settings such as mental health agencies, hospitals, community health centers, and private practice. Throughout your time in the program, you will work with the Career Counselor to explore academic and career planning, study strategies, licensure exam preparation, and professional development resources. Faculty advisors will support you in clarifying counseling career goals and tracking your overall professional growth. Together, the advising team will assist you in creating a resume, building a professional network, gaining practical experience, developing a job search strategy, and establishing a strong professional presence. Students are also guided through the licensure process, with an emphasis placed on the importance of ongoing education and self-care.
Additionally, the Career Counselor serves as the first point of contact for academic and professional concerns, providing structured support and connection to resources, while faculty advisors monitor competency development. This structured approach equips students with the tools and support needed to succeed in their studies and future careers as clinical mental health counselors.
